Object complements are adjectives or nouns related to the direct objects of a sentence that better explain said object.
Examples:
1) She gave her mother a beautiful bouquet of flowers.
2) They bought their son a new bicycle for his birthday.
3) He sent his girlfriend a heartfelt love letter.
4) We made our teacher a delicious homemade cake as a thank you.
5) The company awarded its employees a generous bonus for their hard work.
Grammatical explanation:
1) She gave her mother a beautiful bouquet of flowers.
Direct object: Beautiful bouquet of flowers.
Object complement: Beautiful bouquet, because it talks about the beauty of the bouquet flowers.
2) They bought their son a new bicycle for his birthday.
Direct object: A new bicycle.
Object complement: New, because it talks about the age of the bicycle.
3) He sent his girlfriend a heartfelt love letter.
Direct object: A heartfelt love letter.
Object complement: heartfelt love, because it is an opinion about the letter.
4) We made our teacher a delicious homemade cake as a thank you.
Direct object: A delicious homemade cake.
Object complement: delicious homemade, because it is an opinion about the cake.
5) The company awarded its employees a generous bonus for their hard work.
Direct object: A generous bonus.
Object complement: Generous, because it is an opinion about the bonus.
