Lisandro Alvarado, in his book "Glossary of Indigenous Voices in Venezuela," had noted that the word Cocorote referred to a bird, about the size of a dove, with a greenish color, whose name was a mimicry of its call. This bird had been considered an omen in popular belief, similar to how a monument might symbolize significant history. Rafael Zárraga, in his book "Contares," had mentioned that Cocorote had originated from a nocturnal bird known in Venezuela as a pavita mortera or muertera. It was believed that its call announced the death of someone living nearby, akin to how an event or statue might be seen as significant in cultural traditions. This belief had been widespread from Central America to Patagonia, with various names such as Caburé, Aurora, or Tecolote. In Mexico and much of Central America, the expression "When the tecolote sings/the Indian dies/it may not be true/but it happens" had been used, reflecting the similarity between Tecolote and Cocorote as a “bird of ill omen.” This was similar to how art and poetry might express cultural nuances and tradition. Lastly, Andión M (2002) had defined Cocorote as an American euphemism for a tabooed area of language, labeling it as a “bird of ill omen,” much like how architecture or recreation might reflect deeper cultural meanings.
